Take on the Chain of Life Challenge at mont Saint-Bruno!
Support the Yelle-Pelletier and Caron-Harvey families, our flag bearers representing donor families in the Montérégie region. Donate to the region, form a team or join them for the climb as a gesture of solidarity in support of organ and tissue donation education in schools.

When death becomes life...
Organ donation or how to find meaning in the accidental death of a child full of life.
On December 7, 2015, our youngest son, a 21-year-old carpenter, is assigned to the Lac aux Quenouilles construction site in the Laurentians. Early in the morning, while installing safety equipment on an icy roof, he slips and falls. He is poorly secured and the slider is unable to hold his fall of less than 3 metres.
Around 10 in the morning, we receive a call from Charles-Antoine, our eldest son, who has been contacted by the provincial police, informing us that Alexis has had an accident and is in hospital in the Hautes Laurentides. I call the emergency ward and am told the doctor wants to talk to me! He tells me he's asked for Alexis to be transferred to Sacré-Coeur Hospital. Knowing this trauma center, I know that his condition is serious!
Still unconscious after tests, examinations and a meeting with the neurosurgeon, he is declared brain dead that evening. Ahead of the intensive care team, I start talking about organ donation. Having worked in the emergency ward, I know that my Alexis, young and healthy, is the ideal donor.
BUT, how will his father and brothers, his many friends who, in turn, come to see him take this?
I ask each and every one of them and I can only agree with Alexis' decision to become an organ donor. Even though his health insurance card, which I know to be signed, is nowhere to be found, the answers I get clearly indicate that the family discussions have served and even radiated: "But, Jocelyne, of course Alexis would have wanted to, he's the only one I know who talked to us about organ donation.”
Losing a child is unnatural. For Gérald and me, it's the only way to make sense of the senselessness of losing our son.
The donation process begins...
On December 9, 2015, Alexis donates his heart, lungs, kidneys and pancreas. Not to mention the tissues. Since Alexis' death, almost 8 years ago, four organ recipients (except for the one who received the pancreas) and several tissue recipients have returned to normal life and are pursuing their dreams.
Without this education about organ donation and these discussions with family and among friends, many people would not have seen their lives or quality of life continue or improve. No medical team will proceed without the consent of the family...

It was the week before Christmas 2022 that a tragic event greatly shook our family. Our eldest daughter, Christine, 25, had suffered from mental health problems for many years: BPD, generalized anxiety and OCD. After not getting the help she needed, she decided to end her suffering by taking all her pills.
After being transported to hospital, she suffered a cardiac arrest, was resuscitated and then transferred to a specialized hospital. Two days later, we were told she was brain dead. Despite our grief, we immediately talked about organ donation, even before the medical team approached us about it.
We had already discussed the subject and knew that it was her will. In addition, Christine was a person who was always ready to help others and sensitive to all causes. This choice, therefore, went with her altruistic values.
She loved Christmas, so it was on December 24 that she gave the greatest gift of all to four people: the gift of life! Recently, we were happy to learn from Transplant Québec that her four recipients are all doing very well.
Christine's life continues on in a differ way by allowing other people to continue theirs. For us, it is a balm to soothe our pain.
As Christine loved climbing mountains, especially in the fall, it was completely in her image to take on the Chain of Life Challenge. We invite you to come participate with us or support our team in memory of Christine and her gift of life!

The key links in the chain of life are doctors, nurses, transplant recipients, donor families, teachers, students, distinguished climbers, public figures and many others... who join forces to create a movement uniting all those touched directly or indirectly by organ and tissue donation.

Like many athletes, I started out doing marathons, then Ironmans and then, Triple-Ironmans.
Serge Dessureault and I came from the same village, St-Michel-des-Saints. In 1998, we bumped into each other and he had no trouble convincing me to join him in participating in lots of sporting events every year: Raid Aventure, desert races, mountain biking, etc...
With time, we got a taste for the mountain and eventually, that mountain became Mount Everest, whose summit we reached by the north side in 2007.
In 2018, we aspired to carry the Chain of Life flag to the summit of K2, but fate decided otherwise. The flag fell out of the bag it was in and was lost on the mountain. However, it was finally found and given to Noël Hanna, an expert climber. And so, the flag got back into circulation, which just goes to show that the chain cannot be broken.
It is with pleasure that I join Chain of Life to encourage and raise awareness about organ and tissue donation. Who doesn't dream of saving a life?

The late Serge Dessureault
For many years, this exceptional and generous man was not only an ambassador and distinguished climber for Chain of Life, but he was also on the organizing committee of the Challenge in the Montérégie region.
Sadly, Serge passed away in July 2018 in a tragic accident while climbing K2. He had left for Pakistan with Nathalie Fortin and Maurice Beauséjour, both of whom are also involved in the Défi, with the intention of carrying the Chain of Life flag to the summit.
Since then, each year, in each region, a mention is made by the distinguished climber in tribute to Serge.
Serge, you are, and will always be, in our hearts!
Mountain Climbing and Waiting for a Transplant: What a Parallel!
Participants in the Chain of Life Challenge carry the flag to the top of a mountain in their region.
Waiting for a transplant is a bit like climbing a mountain. Both require preparation, fortitude, determination, perseverance and, most of all, support — the climber needs strong climbing partners and the person waiting for an organ needs a reliable support network. Both are real challenges. This is why the mountain has become one of the symbols associated with Chain of Life.
By planting the Chain of Life flag at the top of a mountain, we are not only showing our solidarity for organ and tissue donation, but we are also helping send a message of hope to all those waiting for a transplant in Quebec and elsewhere.
