Roopa Arora

My name is Roopa Arora. I’m a government school teacher in India who donated 65% of my liver to my husband, Parven Kumar Rattan Kumar, in 2011. I saved his life, who otherwise  had end stage liver failure. My husband is now working as a Senior Accounts Officer for the government and is leading a totally normal life since his transplant.

Being a teacher, I am very much aware of how young people can play a leading role in organ and tissue donation. The Chain of Life educational program on organ and tissue donation resonates with me profoundly because of its unique and innovative approach to encourage students aged 15 to 17 to become ambassadors for family discussions after completing the program in class.

Ultimately, Chain of Life hopes to reach the entire population. Students are led to form a personal and informed opinion about organ and tissue donation. Then, by sharing their opinion and their wishes with their families, they open up a dialogue on the subject and dispel the myths and falsehoods surrounding organ and tissue donation.

Organ and tissue donation not only saves lives, but revolutionizes people as well by making them so much more appreciative of the gift of life. We are living proof! I remember the days when we were praying to God for my husband to get a second chance at life. The Almighty blessed us with two lives:  that of my husband and that of our son, who was born after my living donation.

Our son can see this world thanks to the miracle of organ donation. This has given us so much energy and joy that the entire family is now committed to promoting this noble cause.

This is why I am honoured to be the flag bearer of the Chain of Life Challenge 2026 and to represent my country as a living donor.

My family and I are happy to participate in the hike here in India, in Kasauli (Himachal Pardesh), to highlight the importance of organ and tissue education in school, as well as living donation, which is the key link that Chain of Life is highlighting this year.

As Nelson Mandela said: “Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.”

Together, let's climb for life!
